Washington Black - Between Empire and Home

The balloon is a reality and a metaphor; Halifax is material. The port when fed Caribbean plantations, but it likewise developed into a harbour of refuge for people taking their liberty along the Underground Railroad. Simply down the shore, Africville reminds us that safe house is a pledge we must keep renewing. Barbados and Canada existed long previously Wash's imagined flight, and the conference transformed both: Barbadian migrants reinforced schools, medical facilities, and the arts. Oliver Jones and Joe Sealy scored our cities; Cameron Bailey reframed our screens; Anne Cools moved what leadership looks like. This teaser links the feeling you know to the history you may not.
