This is an entertaining saga of a wild and balmy individual who had a fantastic spirit of adventure and an over-the-top sense of fun. Rex Wotton managed the West Coast Watersports shop at Coral Reef hotel, just up the beach from Settlers Beach. They took hotel guest diving and on daytime and sunset cruises along the coast. He was a professional seafarer trained by the Royal Merchant Navy in ship navigation, sailing, diving, explosives, and marine work. Rex was one of the most unforgettable Rogues in Paradise. He had an infectious sense of fun and used it to win over every situation. He was independent at an early age and often disappeared for days at a time, camping by Joes' river . He built campfires from coconut husk and twigs and cooked his catch with breadfruit, wild okras, plantain, and edible vines. He ate mangoes, and local berries like fat pork, and sea grapes, that grow along the beach.
As a child, he had a habit of disappearing into the woods: Leaving home with simply the bare essentials, shorts, t-shirt, loafers, hunting knife, a Panama hat, and little more, he lived off the land: He sheltered amongst trees, caves, and rocks, which he blanketed with shrub and debris, creating a roof with palms and banana leaves. Banana leaves have many uses. Wound around food, they serve as a container for cooking over a fire. They make an excellent surface to serve up a meal, and can be used as a shade and a cover on which to lie down.
